PART 3
The threat on my screen filled the room with unbearable tension.
“What in the world does she think she knows about you, Lucas?” I asked in a quiet whisper so I wouldn’t wake up Bella in the other room.
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he walked over to the bedroom window, staring out at the quiet trees of our neighborhood. When he finally turned back to face me, he looked completely drained of energy.
“She is referring to my early business transactions,” he said quietly, running both hands over his face. “Three years ago, right before we got married, Gertrude’s husband, Uncle Raymond, offered to help me secure a major logistics contract with a distribution firm. I was desperate to expand the business so we would be financially comfortable before our wedding day.”
He sat down on the edge of the bed and kept his eyes fixed on the floor. “Raymond insisted that to secure the deal, we had to pay a special consulting fee to an outside representative. I was inexperienced, so I paid the fee directly from my corporate account. But a year later, I realized Raymond had routed that money directly into a shell company owned by Gertrude. It was an illegal financial kickback, and on paper, it makes me look like a willing partner in corporate fraud. If she releases those invoices to the authorities, my company will be ruined, and I could face real criminal charges.”
The entire situation suddenly made complete sense. Gertrude hadn’t targeted us out of random cruelty; her non-stop attacks on my baby’s paternity were actually a deliberate strategy to keep us defensive. She spent an entire year tearing down Lucas’s confidence and pushing us away from the family so that if we ever questioned her honesty, no one would believe our word over hers. She wanted to keep us terrified and overwhelmed so we would never look into her financial management of Grandma’s estate.
I sat down right beside Lucas and took his cold hands in mine. The deep anger I had carried for years turned into absolute clarity and determination.
“She is using fear to control us, Lucas,” I said firmly, looking straight into his eyes. “She assumed you would stay silent out of shame, just like she assumed I would stay silent about Grandma’s money to spare my father’s feelings. But her game ends today.”
The very next morning, two major events unfolded in rapid succession.
At ten o’clock in the morning, my phone chimed with a secure notification from the laboratory. My heart raced as I opened the attached document, but I didn’t read it by myself. I immediately drove down to Lucas’s office, walked into his room, placed the phone on his desk, and we looked at the final page together.
The test results showed a 99.9999% probability of paternity, confirming that Lucas was indisputably the biological father of our daughter Bella.
Lucas stared at the official laboratory seal for a long time as quiet tears ran down his cheeks. He buried his face in his hands and wept softly, letting go of the heavy emotional burden he had been carrying for months. I held him tightly in my arms, allowing him to finally heal from the endless, cruel comments that had damaged his peace of mind.
“Now it is time for us to fix the rest of this mess,” I told him softly.
At two o’clock that afternoon, my father gathered the entire family at his home in Nashville. He didn’t just invite my parents, but also brought in my uncles, my cousins, my mother-in-law Deborah, and my grandmother’s estate attorney, Mr. Vance.
Gertrude arrived alongside Uncle Raymond, walking into the room with her head held high in a desperate attempt to look unbothered. However, the moment she saw the thick stacks of financial folders arranged on the dining table next to a digital projector, her confident smile instantly collapsed.
“What is the meaning of this group meeting, Terrence?” Gertrude demanded angrily, crossing her arms. “Are you organizing another attack against me just because your daughter cannot take a joke?”
My father remained remarkably calm, simply pointing toward the dining chairs. “For an entire year, Gertrude, you have harassed my daughter and her husband without showing a single bit of mercy. You used a baby’s hair color to cause pain, but we are not sitting here today to talk about genetics. We are here to address four hundred and forty thousand missing dollars.”
Mr. Vance turned on the projector, displaying large digital scans of my grandmother’s bank statements directly onto the wall.
“During the final six months of Doña Sofia’s life,” Mr. Vance explained clearly, pointing to highlighted numbers, “over four hundred and forty thousand dollars were withdrawn from her primary accounts. We have gathered medical documentation proving that Doña Sofia suffered from crippling nerve damage in her hands during this timeframe, which made it physically impossible for her to write signatures.”
He clicked to the next slide, displaying a side-by-side comparison of my grandmother’s genuine, shaky signature from years ago against the steady handwriting found on thirty-two checks issued to Gertrude.
“Additionally,” Mr. Vance continued, “we tracked the computer records for an electronic transfer of eighty thousand dollars executed while Doña Sofia was lying unconscious in the hospital. That digital transfer originated directly from a computer located inside Gertrude’s personal residence.”
Gasps echoed across the room as my cousin Chloe gasped in shock and my mother began to cry softly.
Gertrude’s face turned bright red as she shouted back, “This whole claim is absurd! She willingly gave me that money as a personal gift for taking care of her needs!”
“Grandma couldn’t even hold a basic spoon during those months, Aunt Gertrude,” I stated firmly as I stood up from my seat. “And real gifts do not require someone to forge another person’s signature.”
Gertrude turned her glare toward Lucas with a desperate look in her eyes. “Do you really think you are safe, Mariana? Why don’t you ask your wonderful husband where he got the initial money to expand his business? Ask him about the payments he sent directly to my firm, because if I go down for fraud, Lucas is going to prison right alongside me!”
The entire room went completely quiet as Uncle Raymond stared silently at the floor, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Lucas stood up calmly beside me, looking steady and entirely unfazed by her threat. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a signed legal document, and placed it directly onto the table.
“I went directly to the State Prosecutor’s office early this morning, Gertrude,” Lucas announced in a clear, confident voice. “I handed them every single invoice, bank record, and a complete written confession detailing the kickback scheme that Raymond set up years ago. I admitted my mistake, provided full documentation, and offered my complete cooperation to the fraud investigators.”
Gertrude’s mouth dropped open in complete shock while Raymond leaned against the table for support.
“The prosecutor informed me,” Lucas added coldly, “that because I came forward voluntarily before any formal investigation began, I have been granted full immunity as a cooperating witness. However, for you and Raymond, the paper trail showing grand theft, extortion, and financial exploitation of an elderly relative is absolute.”
My father stood up from his chair and placed both hands on the table. “You have exactly forty-eight hours, Gertrude. You must sign a legal agreement waiving your entire share of the family inheritance to reimburse the stolen funds with interest. If you refuse, or if you ever approach my daughter or my granddaughter again, Mr. Vance will immediately file formal criminal charges with the authorities.”
Gertrude looked around the large room, desperately searching for support among her brothers, sisters, and relatives. Every single family member turned their gaze away from her, completely breaking the illusion of her innocence.
Without saying another word, she grabbed Raymond by the arm and rushed out of the house in absolute disgrace.
Six months after that chaotic afternoon, peace had finally returned to our daily lives.
Gertrude signed all the required legal papers, surrendering her portion of the inheritance to fully cover the missing money, which my father placed into a private trust fund for Bella’s future college education. Raymond’s logistics company shut down completely following a state financial audit, and while they avoided prison time through restitution payments, they were completely cut off from the rest of the family.
The physical lab papers showing the positive DNA results were safely burned in a small fire pit in our backyard, providing a clean closure to the toxic rumors that had once threatened our home. My mother-in-law Deborah began visiting us every weekend, spending hours playing with Bella and baking sweet treats to make up for her past doubts.
On a warm afternoon, Lucas and I sat together on our front porch, watching Bella take her first small, confident steps across the soft green grass. Her bright red hair caught the sunlight perfectly, looking exceptionally vibrant and beautiful in the fresh air.
Lucas wrapped his arm around my shoulder and gently kissed the side of my head. “She truly inherited your grandmother’s strong spirit,” he said with a warm, genuine smile.
“She certainly did,” I replied, taking his hand tightly in mine. “And no one will ever make our family feel ashamed again.”
