PART 4: THE GIRL WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST
Officer Daniel Harris stared at the black sedan disappearing beyond the abandoned community center. The stuffed bunny in its rear window looked exactly like Emily’s, down to the pink ribbon tied around its neck. But Emily’s bunny was lying on the floor beside her. Daniel turned toward the trembling woman holding Emily. “What do you mean she wasn’t the only girl?”
The woman swallowed hard. “Thomas had another child in that house. A little girl named Grace. She was only five when I last saw her.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Was Grace his daughter?”
The woman shook her head, tears streaming down her face.
“No. She was mine.”
For a moment, everything seemed to stop.
Emily looked up at her mother.
“Mommy… I have a sister?”
The woman closed her eyes.
“Yes, sweetheart. You have a little sister.”
Emily’s lips trembled.
“Daddy told me Grace went to heaven.”
Her mother covered her mouth, trying to hold back a sob.
“No, baby. Grace was alive the last time I saw her.”
Daniel immediately grabbed his radio.
“Dispatch, issue an alert for a black sedan leaving Riverside Community Center. Possible abducted child, female, approximately seven years old, named Grace.”
Detective Sarah Mitchell’s voice came through seconds later.
“Daniel, we found something in Bennett’s documents. There’s a child listed under the name Grace Carter. No birth certificate attached. No school enrollment. Nothing.”
“That’s her,” Daniel answered. “We need to find her.”
But the woman suddenly gripped his sleeve.
“Officer, there’s something else you need to know.”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“My name is Laura Miller,” she whispered. “Two years ago, I tried to report Thomas and Richard Bennett. I had photographs, documents, everything. I took them to the police.”
“What happened?”
“Lieutenant Collins intercepted my complaint. Three days later, Thomas told everyone I’d abandoned my family.”
Laura’s voice broke.
“But I didn’t leave. They took me.”
Daniel glanced toward the doorway where Collins had been arrested.
“Where did they keep you?”
“Different places. Every few months they moved me. They told me if I tried to escape, my daughters would disappear.”
Emily began crying again.
Laura kissed her forehead.
“I thought you were gone forever, sweetheart.”
Daniel looked at the reunited mother and daughter and felt a wave of anger unlike anything he had experienced in his career.
Then his radio crackled.
“Officer Harris, we have a possible sighting of the black sedan.”
“Location?”
“Northbound on Route 16. Vehicle passed a traffic camera approximately four minutes ago.”
Daniel stood immediately.
“Any sign of the child?”
A pause.
Then the dispatcher answered.
“There’s something unusual. The rear passenger window was partially lowered. A small hand was visible.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Can you identify the driver?”
“We’re enhancing the image.”
Seconds later, the dispatcher spoke again.
“Driver appears to be Richard Bennett.”
Daniel looked at Sarah, who had just entered the room.
“We need to move.”
Sarah nodded.
“State police are already setting up coordinated observation points. Nobody approaches until we know the child is safe.”
Meanwhile, twenty miles away, Richard Bennett drove along a quiet country road, his expensive suit jacket tossed onto the passenger seat.
In the back sat a little girl with tangled blonde hair and frightened blue eyes.
Grace.
She held a stuffed bunny against her chest.
“Where are we going?” she whispered.
Bennett watched her through the mirror.
“Somewhere safe.”
“I want Emily.”
His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
“Emily isn’t coming.”
Grace stared out the window.
“That’s what Daddy said about Mommy.”
Bennett didn’t respond.
Then Grace said something that made his expression change.
“I know what you did.”
Bennett looked sharply into the mirror.
“What did you say?”
The little girl pulled her bunny closer.
“I heard you and Daddy talking. You said the other children were gone because they knew too much.”
Bennett forced a smile.
“Children misunderstand grown-up conversations.”
Grace shook her head.
“No. I remember their names.”
Bennett’s smile disappeared.
At the Springfield police station, investigators were examining the hidden drive recovered from Thomas Miller’s basement.
One folder contained dozens of forged guardianship forms and financial transactions. Another contained recordings documenting how children had been moved between houses under false identities.
Then a technician discovered a password-protected directory labeled “PROJECT HOME.”
After recovering access, investigators found a list of properties belonging to companies associated with Bennett.
Most were ordinary rental houses.
But one address stood out.
An abandoned farmhouse outside Springfield.
And beside that property was a note.
“FINAL TRANSFER LOCATION.”
Sarah studied the screen.
“That’s where he’s going.”
Daniel checked the map.
The farmhouse was only six miles from the last confirmed sighting of Bennett’s vehicle.
But then an investigator opened another document.
It was a scanned medical record.
At the top was a name.
Grace Miller.
Below it was a date of birth.
And underneath, in bold red letters:
“SUBJECT MUST NOT BE RELEASED TO BIOLOGICAL FAMILY.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“Why would Bennett be so determined to keep this particular child?”
The technician scrolled down.
There was a photograph attached to the file.
A newborn baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.
Beside her stood Laura Miller.
But the man holding the baby wasn’t Thomas.
It was Richard Bennett.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Sarah, look at the date.”
Sarah checked the hospital information.
“Seven years ago.”
Then she noticed the physician’s signature.
Dr. Michael Bennett.
Richard Bennett’s younger brother.
The doctor had died in what police records described as a single-vehicle accident eighteen months earlier.
Daniel remembered something from the investigation.
Michael Bennett had reportedly been preparing to testify in a fraud case shortly before his death.
Sarah opened another folder.
Inside was a recorded interview dated two days before Michael’s fatal accident.
In the recording, Michael sat alone in what appeared to be his office.
His hands trembled as he spoke.
“My brother has been falsifying medical and guardianship records for years. Some of these children have living parents. Some were taken from families who were told they had died.”
Sarah’s face turned pale.
Michael continued.
“But there’s one child who can expose everything. Grace Miller. Richard has been hiding the truth about her birth since the beginning.”
The recording suddenly stopped.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Play the next file.”
The technician clicked.
A second recording appeared.
Michael’s face was closer to the camera.
His eyes were wet.
“If anything happens to me, find Laura Miller. She knows why Grace was never supposed to exist.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Richard Bennett’s voice came through.
“Officer Harris. I believe you’ve been looking for me.”
“Where’s Grace?”
“She’s fine. For now.”
“Let her go, Bennett. It’s over.”
Bennett laughed quietly.
“Over? You have no idea how many people are involved.”
Daniel motioned for Sarah to activate the call recording.
“What do you want?”
“I want the hard drive from Thomas’s house. And I want Laura Miller brought to me.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“You’re not getting Laura.”
“Then you won’t get Grace.”
A small voice suddenly cried out in the background.
“Please, Mommy!”
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Don’t hurt her!”
Bennett lowered his voice.
“You have forty minutes. The old farmhouse on County Road 9. Come alone.”
The line disconnected.
Sarah immediately called the tactical commander.
“We’ve confirmed the destination. Suspect is holding a child hostage. Begin a controlled approach.”
But Daniel wasn’t listening.
He was staring at the photograph of newborn Grace.
Something about it bothered him.
He enlarged the image.
Behind Laura stood a hospital nurse holding a clipboard.
The nurse’s face was partially visible.
Daniel recognized her.
He had seen that same woman earlier that evening.
At Thomas Miller’s house.
Standing among the responding medical personnel.
He turned toward Sarah.
“Who assigned the paramedics to Maplewood Drive?”
Sarah frowned.
“Emergency dispatch. Why?”
Daniel pointed to the photograph.
“Because this woman was there tonight.”
Sarah looked closer.
Her face changed.
“That’s not possible.”
“Why?”
Sarah swallowed.
“Because according to the hospital records, that nurse died six years ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who did we see tonight?”
Before Sarah could answer, the technician called from across the room.
“Detective! You need to see this!”
On the monitor was a security photograph taken outside the hospital earlier that morning.
It showed the same woman entering through a side entrance.
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her walked a uniformed officer carrying a little girl’s pink backpack.
Sarah zoomed in on the officer’s face.
Her hands began trembling.
It was Officer Mary Davis.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No. Mary rescued Emily. She helped us.”
Sarah said nothing.
Then Daniel remembered something.
Mary had been the first officer to notice the basement door.
Mary had insisted on examining Emily alone.
And Mary was the person standing beside Emily when Lieutenant Collins took her outside.
His phone suddenly buzzed.
A text message from Mary.
“Daniel, I’ve found Grace. Don’t tell Sarah. She’s not who you think she is.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
“If you want the little girl alive, come to the hospital basement. And whatever you do, don’t trust the woman standing next to you.”
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes toward Sarah Mitchell.
She was watching him.
“What did Mary say?” she asked.
Before he could answer, Sarah’s phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
And for one brief second, Daniel saw the name displayed there.
RICHARD BENNETT.
Sarah immediately declined the call.
Then she looked directly at Daniel and whispered:
“There’s something I should have told you about Grace’s real father.”….
