Jennifer Hudson Said Her Teen Son Now Decides What She Can Post About Him

In a 2024 interview with Today, Jennifer opened up about how motherhood has changed now that David Jr. is older — and, according to her, much more independent.

“It goes from that phase when we’re holding them, we’re in the forefront and taking care of everything,” Jennifer said. “Now my son is carrying me! That transition comes way quicker than we could ever imagine.”

Jennifer said raising a teenager has required her to rethink the way she parents. “Holding you is not the way to mother you now,” she explained. “So how do you need me? And what way do you need me?”

The singer also revealed that David Jr. now controls how much of himself appears on her social media accounts.

“It’s all up to him now. When they’re little you can put what you want to put, you can say what you want to say,” the acclaimed actress said. “Now he’ll say, ‘Tag me in this,’ or ‘Don’t post this.’ It’s all him.”

As reported in April 2019, a judge had set a hearing for David to make his case against the “Dreamgirls” star and have her take the stand under oath to discuss their relationship.

According to court documents reported by The Blast, David had filed the motion in hopes that the deposition would help him win his case. Meanwhile, Jennifer had also filed a motion of her own.

Back then, Jennifer filed for an emergency order of protection, alleging that David pushed her while she was holding their son. She was granted a temporary order before later dropping the petition.

David denied the allegations, but the two continued battling in court. At the time, he had requested that Jennifer cover the housing costs for him.

According to David, he had been David Jr.’s primary caregiver throughout the relationship because of Jennifer’s demanding career as a singer and performer.

The singer denied the claim and argued that David appeared to want “a career path identical to Jennifer’s.”

Jennifer also pushed back against the suggestion that her career prevented her from caring for their son.

She further argued that because the two were never married, David was not entitled to housing costs or to continue living in a home comparable to hers.

A document from Jennifer’s side read:

“Having a child with a celebrity should not be the basis to treat David like someone who has given birth to a child and who has no means of supporting the child. Jennifer is the one who gave birth to the minor child, who had the child with her as she traveled prior to the difficulties the parties experienced in their relationship.”

Now that Jennifer and David’s custody dispute has long been resolved, moments like the emotional Mother’s Day surprise on her talk show have given fans a glimpse into the strong bond she shares with David Jr. as he continues growing up in the spotlight.
