My sister thrust her newborn baby into my arms and begged me to claim the child as my own.

I stared at the text message on my phone, reading it over and over until the words blurred.

“Don’t tell anyone, Sophie. Reagan’s father is Rob’s brother.”

Each repetition sent a fresh wave of dread through my stomach. I knew Rob’s brother, Damian. He was the kind of guy whose friendly smile always came with a hidden price tag. The last time I saw him was at a family gathering in the South Side—wearing a fake gold chain and acting like the world owed him something. Rob had barely spoken a word to him that day, his jaw tight every time Damian interacted with Valerie. I had assumed it was basic sibling rivalry. Now, the horrifying reality set in.

Looking down at baby Reagan sleeping soundly against my chest, fear gripped me. Not for myself, but for her.

I immediately called my best friend, Marisol, asking her to come over without giving details. Less than an hour later, she arrived with donuts. When I showed her the text and the photo of Damian with the baby, her face went pale.

“Sophie,” Marisol said quietly, “this isn’t just family drama anymore. This is dangerous.”

We stayed up all night. I backed up every desperate text, insulting voice clip, and threat Valerie had ever sent me, forwarding the entire paper trail to Marisol. At 5:00 AM, while feeding Reagan her bottle, I thought about Mom. She would have likely concocted another lie to keep the peace. But I knew lies didn’t protect people—they just grew larger until they crushed everyone involved.

At 8:00 AM, Rob called, his voice flat and exhausted. He asked to meet. I agreed, telling him to bring someone with him because I had information he needed to hear, but didn’t want him reacting recklessly.

An hour later, we met at a diner. Marisol held Reagan while I brought the diaper bag and the evidence. Rob arrived with his father, Mr. Miller, a hard-working, somber man. When I showed them the photo, Mr. Miller’s face drained of color.

“Not again,” he whispered.
