- The Unraveling of the Web
- The interrogation room at the district attorney’s office smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and fluorescent fatigue. Outside, the rain beat a relentless tattoo against the high, reinforced windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside the building.
- Octavio sat hunched over a heavy metal table, his designer suit wrinkled, his manicured hands cuffed together. The facade of the smooth, grieving brother-in-law had entirely dissolved, replaced by a bitter, calculating cornered animal.
- Across the hall, Leticia refused to speak. She sat with her arms tightly crossed, her eyes fixed on the blank wall, refusing to look at her defense attorney or the detectives who periodically entered the room with new bundles of evidence.
- Inspector Mitchell dropped a thick manila folder onto the table in front of Octavio.
- “You two were thorough,” Mitchell said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. “Eleven years of playing the sibling card. Changing names, setting up shell companies, moving from state to state whenever a husband’s estate was successfully settled. Gerald was just a trial run, wasn’t he? A dry run to test out the paralytic and the cremation shortcut.”
- Octavio sneered, keeping his eyes down. “You have no proof of anything. I’m a respected businessman. Leticia is a grieving widow. What happened at the wedding was a tragic medical emergency—a sudden heart failure brought on by excitement.”
- “Heart failure?” Mitchell chuckled dryly, opening the folder to reveal a series of clinical photographs and chemical lab reports. “Arthur’s bloodwork showed traces of a rare neuromuscular blocking agent—the exact same compound found in the tissue samples exhumed from Gerald’s plot last week. And let’s talk about the life insurance policy, Octavio. Signed three days before the wedding. One million dollars, payable directly to ‘Leticia Vance,’ your legally wedded wife.”
- Octavio flinched. The mask cracked just a fraction.
- “She loved the money,” Octavio muttered bitterly, almost to himself. “She always wanted more than what the small scores brought in. I told her we should have stopped after Gerald. But she got greedy. She wanted Arthur’s entire manufacturing firm, his house, his investments.”
- “And you helped her orchestrate his murder in front of three hundred guests,” Mitchell said. “You’re looking at multiple counts of attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, and now, felony murder for Gerald’s case. You’re going away for the rest of your natural life, Octavio. The only question is whether you want to spend it in solitary or make a deal.”
