PART 8 – Daniel Used Jake as Leverage, but the Rescue Plan Collapsed When Lily Revealed She Had Already Made a Deal Behind Our Backs

  • “No.”
  • Lily said it before Michael finished speaking.
  • “He does not get me.”
  • Michael’s expression hardened.
  • “This isn’t about what he gets.”
  • “It’s about Jake.”
  • “Yes.”
  • I looked at Michael.
  • “Did you hear Jake?”
  • “No.”
  • “Then we don’t know Daniel has him.”
  • “He sent a picture.”
  • Michael unlocked his phone.
  • I took it.
  • Jake sat in what looked like an office chair.
  • His hands were behind him.
  • A strip of silver tape covered his mouth.
  • The image had been taken recently.
  • He wore the same blue shirt he had worn the previous evening when he came by our house.
  • Behind him was a concrete wall.
  • A pipe.
  • Part of a green metal door.
  • Lily covered her mouth.
  • “Oh God.”
  • I enlarged the image.
  • “Could this be fake?”
  • Michael shook his head.
  • “There’s another.”
  • The second photograph showed Jake’s watch.
  • Today’s date was visible.
  • My legs weakened.
  • I handed the phone back.
  • “What does Daniel want exactly?”
  • “Lily at the old textile warehouse off Route Nine.”
  • “When?”
  • “Eleven-thirty.”
  • “Alone?”
  • “Yes.”
  • Lily laughed without humor.
  • “Of course.”
  • “You’re not going,” I said.
  • She looked at me.
  • “That’s my brother.”
  • The word struck me.
  • Brother.
  • Jake and Lily had apparently already chosen what they were to each other.
  • I had not been present for that either.
  • “We call the police,” I said.
  • Michael shook his head.
  • “Already did.”
  • I stared.
  • “When?”
  • “On the way here.”
  • “And?”
  • “They’re coordinating.”
  • “Then why are you acting like we’re handling this alone?”
  • “Because Daniel specifically warned that he will know if police arrive.”
  • “That’s what kidnappers say.”
  • “He may actually know.”
  • I looked at him.
  • “How?”
  • Michael gestured toward the folder.
  • “Lane’s network included local officials.”
  • “Eighteen years ago.”
  • “Some are still around.”
  • “That doesn’t mean every officer is corrupt.”
  • “No.”
  • “Then we use people we trust.”
  • Michael nodded.
  • “I contacted one.”
  • “Who?”
  • “Detective Elena Ruiz.”
  • I recognized the name.
  • She had investigated the second break-in at our house.
  • “You told me that case went nowhere.”
  • “It officially did.”
  • “Unofficially?”
  • “She kept looking.”
  • Another secret.
  • I was almost too tired to be angry.
  • “Where is she?”
  • “Meeting us here.”
  • As if summoned, headlights appeared outside.
  • A dark SUV approached.
  • Michael went to the window.
  • “That’s Ruiz.”
  • A woman in her fifties entered three minutes later wearing jeans and a dark jacket instead of a uniform.
  • I remembered her immediately.
  • She had been younger the last time I saw her but carried the same focused stillness.
  • “Susan.”
  • “You knew?”
  • Her face tightened.
  • “Some of it.”
  • I laughed.
  • “Of course.”
  • “I didn’t know about Lily until much later.”
  • “That distinction is becoming popular.”
  • Ruiz accepted the anger without defending herself.
  • “We can argue about what I should have told you after we get your son back.”
  • That stopped me.
  • “What’s the plan?”
  • She placed a tablet on the table.
  • An aerial image of the warehouse appeared.
  • “Daniel chose a bad building if he wants privacy.”
  • “Why?”
  • “City installed traffic cameras nearby last year.”
  • Michael leaned closer.
  • “Can you access them?”
  • “Yes.”
  • Ruiz opened another view.
  • “We’ve confirmed a sedan matching Daniel’s entered the industrial block forty minutes ago.”
  • “Jake?”
  • “We haven’t seen him.”
  • Lily pointed.
  • “There’s another entrance.”
  • Ruiz looked at her.
  • “How do you know?”
  • Lily froze.
  • That tiny hesitation changed the room.
  • I looked at her.
  • “How do you know?”
  • “I’ve been there.”
  • Michael stood.
  • “When?”
  • Lily’s face went pale.
  • “Two weeks ago.”
  • “Why?”
  • No answer.
  • “Lily.”
  • She looked at me.
  • “I met Daniel there.”
  • Michael swore.
  • “You said the coffee shop was the last time.”
  • “It was the first time.”
  • “You lied.”
  • “Yes.”
  • His anger filled the room.
  • I understood it now in a way I would not have days earlier.
  • Fear often wore Michael’s anger like a coat.
  • “What happened two weeks ago?” I asked.
  • Lily sat down.
  • “He contacted me through an encrypted account.”
  • “About the trust?”
  • “At first.”
  • “What did he want?”
  • “For me to sign a declaration stating that he is my biological father.”
  • “Without DNA?”
  • “Yes.”
  • “Why?”
  • “He said recognition would simplify the trust transition.”
  • Ruiz leaned forward.
  • “It would also give him standing in several related claims.”
  • Lily nodded.
  • “I figured that out.”
  • “Did you sign?”
  • “No.”
  • Michael exhaled.
  • “But I told him I would consider it.”
  • “Why?” he demanded.
  • “Because I wanted information.”
  • “You could have been killed.”
  • “And you could have told me the truth years ago.”
  • They stared at each other.
  • I stepped between them.
  • “What information?”
  • Lily reached into her bag.
  • She removed a flash drive.
  • “Daniel gave me access to files.”
  • Michael stared.
  • “You had that this whole time?”
  • “Yes.”
  • “What’s on it?”
  • “I don’t know everything.”
  • Ruiz opened her laptop.
  • “Do not plug unknown media into that.”
  • Lily blinked.
  • Ruiz almost smiled.
  • “Finally, one secret I can solve quickly.”
  • She took an isolated device from her bag.
  • After several minutes, files appeared.
  • Scanned documents.
  • Emails.
  • Audio recordings.
  • Bank transfers.
  • Photographs.
  • Ruiz’s expression changed.
  • “This is substantial.”
  • Michael leaned in.
  • “What?”
  • “Correspondence between Daniel and Arthur Harris.”
  • I felt sick.
  • “From when?”
  • “2007 through 2009.”
  • Lily pointed toward one folder.
  • “That one.”
  • Ruiz opened it.
  • The subject line read Susan.
  • There were dozens of messages.
  • I had to look away.
  • My entire affair reduced to communications between two men.
  • Meeting locations.
  • Schedules.
  • Observations about my marriage.
  • Comments about what made me lonely.
  • Daniel had studied me.
  • Not emotionally.
  • Strategically.
  • One email from Harris read:
  • Do not allow personal attachment to interfere with the objective.
  • Daniel replied:
  • She trusts me.
  • Another:
  • Pregnancy complicates timing but may ultimately improve leverage.
  • My hands went cold.
  • Lily whispered, “I’m sorry.”
  • I shook my head.
  • “No.”
  • She had nothing to apologize for.
  • Ruiz opened another message.
  • This one was dated the night before my overdose.
  • Daniel to Harris:
  • Michael knows.
  • Harris replied:
  • Then the timetable changes. Keep Susan isolated if possible.
  • Ruiz scrolled.
  • The next message was sent the morning of my overdose.
  • Daniel:
  • She isn’t answering.
  • Then, forty minutes later:
  • Michael called an ambulance.
  • Harris:
  • I’ll handle the hospital.
  • My stomach turned.
  • Michael put one hand on the table.
  • The room had become too small.
  • “Keep going,” I said.
  • Ruiz opened the correspondence from the following day.
  • Harris:
  • The infant survived. Margaret knows. Lane wants immediate transfer.
  • Daniel:
  • Give her to me.
  • Harris:
  • No.
  • Daniel:
  • She is mine.
  • Harris:
  • You don’t know that.
  • Every person in the room stopped.
  • Michael whispered, “There.”
  • I looked at him.
  • “That’s why you never knew.”
  • “Yes.”
  • Ruiz continued.
  • Daniel:
  • Then test her.
  • Harris:
  • Too dangerous. Michael is refusing.
  • I looked at Michael.
  • “You refused DNA?”
  • “At that moment.”
  • “Why?”
  • “Because Lane had people inside the hospital.”
  • The emails continued.
  • Harris:
  • Margaret has arranged removal.
  • Daniel:
  • Susan will ask.
  • Harris:
  • She will be told the pregnancy was lost.
  • I stood so abruptly that my chair struck the wall.
  • Lily reached for me.
  • I stepped away, not because I rejected her but because I could not tolerate being touched.
  • There it was.
  • The decision.
  • Written plainly.
  • A group of people had decided my daughter would disappear and I would be told she never existed.
  • Michael had gone along with it.
  • Perhaps under threat.
  • Perhaps to save us.
  • But he had gone along.
  • Ruiz closed the folder.
  • “We have enough here to reopen multiple cases.”
  • “After Jake,” I said.
  • “Yes.”
  • “What about the warehouse?”
  • Lily moved closer to the aerial image.
  • “The rear entrance is here.”
  • She pointed toward a loading bay.
  • “Daniel took me through it.”
  • Ruiz studied her.
  • “Anything else?”
  • “There’s an office on the second floor.”
  • “Concrete wall?”
  • “Yes.”
  • My heart pounded.
  • “Jake.”
  • “Probably,” Lily said.
  • Ruiz began making calls.
  • She spoke quietly, using names I did not recognize.
  • When she finished, she looked at us.
  • “A tactical team will position outside the traffic-camera zone. We’ll use plain vehicles.”
  • Michael nodded.
  • “I’m going.”
  • “No,” Ruiz said.
  • “Yes.”
  • “No.”
  • He looked at her.
  • “My son is in there.”
  • “And that makes you emotionally compromised.”
  • “I don’t care.”
  • “I do.”
  • He stepped closer.
  • “You’ve known me eighteen years.”
  • “Exactly.”
  • Ruiz did not blink.
  • “You are useful when you think. You stop thinking around your family.”
  • Michael looked at me.
  • I expected him to argue.
  • Instead he sat.
  • That scared me more.
  • Lily said, “Daniel expects me.”
  • Ruiz turned.
  • “You are not bait.”
  • “He won’t bring Jake out unless he sees me.”
  • “We can simulate that.”
  • “He knows how I walk.”
  • The statement surprised all of us.
  • Lily looked embarrassed.
  • “He watches people.”
  • I remembered.
  • Daniel had always noticed physical details.
  • Which hand I used to hold a glass.
  • How I tilted my head when nervous.
  • What shoes I wore when I planned to walk somewhere.
  • “Then he’ll know if it isn’t her,” I said.
  • Ruiz frowned.
  • “That doesn’t mean I’m putting an eighteen-year-old civilian in a hostage exchange.”
  • “I’m seventeen,” Lily said.
  • “That did not improve the argument.”
  • Despite everything, Michael almost smiled.
  • Then Lily’s phone vibrated.
  • Every face turned toward it.
  • Unknown number.
  • A text.
  • I’m tired of waiting.
  • A photograph loaded.
  • Jake again.
  • This time the tape was gone.
  • His lower lip was bleeding.
  • Below the picture:
  • 11:00 now.
  • Lily checked the clock.
  • Forty-three minutes.
  • Ruiz grabbed her radio.
  • “We move.”
  • Lily stood.
  • “I’m coming.”
  • “No.”
  • “You need him looking at me.”
  • Ruiz swore under her breath.
  • Michael looked toward me.
  • It was the first time in days he seemed to ask rather than decide.
  • I looked at Lily.
  • “What do you want to do?”
  • She met my eyes.
  • “I want Jake alive.”
  • “So do I.”
  • “I can get Daniel talking.”
  • “You’re sure?”
  • “No.”
  • That honesty decided me.
  • “Then we don’t pretend you’re safe. We build the safest version of a dangerous plan.”
  • Michael whispered, “Susan.”
  • I turned.
  • “For eighteen years, everyone made choices for her.”
  • I pointed at Lily.
  • “For eighteen years, everyone made choices for me.”
  • My voice hardened.
  • “That ends tonight.”
  • Ruiz looked between us.
  • Then nodded once.
  • “All right.”
  • The plan formed quickly.
  • Lily would approach through the main entrance wearing a concealed microphone.
  • Officers would enter from the rear once Daniel confirmed Jake’s location.
  • Michael and I would remain outside in Ruiz’s vehicle.
  • I hated every part of it.
  • At 10:52, we reached the industrial district.
  • The warehouse rose ahead like a dark block against the sky.
  • Lily sat beside me in the back seat.
  • Her hands trembled.
  • I covered one with mine.
  • She looked down at our fingers.
  • Then at me.
  • “I used to wonder what your hands looked like.”
  • The sentence broke something in me.
  • I held tighter.
  • “I used to wonder what my life would have been like if I had a daughter.”
  • Her eyes filled.
  • “We missed a lot.”
  • “Yes.”
  • “We still have time.”
  • I wanted to promise her decades.
  • Instead I said, “We have tonight.”
  • Ruiz opened the door.
  • Lily stepped out.
  • She walked toward the warehouse alone.
  • Through the microphone, we heard the scrape of the metal door.
  • Then Daniel’s voice.
  • “You came.”
  • Lily answered steadily.
  • “Where’s Jake?”
  • “Close.”
  • “I want to see him.”
  • “You’ll see him after you sign.”
  • Paper rustled.
  • Michael clenched his fists.
  • Ruiz whispered into her radio.
  • “Wait.”
  • Lily said, “What is it?”
  • “Recognition of paternity. Transfer authorization. Nothing complicated.”
  • “You always say that when something is complicated.”
  • Daniel laughed softly.
  • For one terrible second, I heard the man I had known.
  • “Your mother used to say things like that.”
  • Lily replied, “Don’t talk about her.”
  • Silence.
  • Then Daniel’s voice changed.
  • “She’s outside, isn’t she?”
  • Ruiz froze.
  • Michael looked at me.
  • Nobody moved.
  • Daniel continued.
  • “Susan?”
  • My blood went cold.
  • “You never were good at staying away from locked doors.”
  • Lily whispered, “How does he know?”
  • Then another voice came through the microphone.
  • Jake.
  • “Lily, run.”
  • A gunshot exploded through the speaker.
  • The audio cut dead.
